Trofej je pomenovaná na počesť Marie Evelyn Moretonovej, manželke maršala Juliena Bynga, vojnového hrdinu, ktorý sa v roku 1921 stal generálnym guvernérom Kanady. Lady Byngová bola známa fanúšička hokeja, a preto sa v roku 1925 rozhodla venovať túto trofej najväčšiemu džentlmenovi na ľade, Frankovi Nighborovi z Ottawy Senators.
