Nick Schultz might be one of the veteran, left-handed stay-at-home defenseman the Bruins are looking at. The Bruins aren’t looking for a defenseman who has term left on his deal. Some fans may be dreaming of a Andrew Ference return. Ference has three years left at $3.25 million. Other D targets could be Chris Phillips, Dan Girardi and Andrew MacDonald.
“The pickings are slim,” said one Bruins source when asked about the trade market for veteran defensemen.
Kevin Paul Dupont: Dupont wonders if Bruins fans would be fine with trading Malcolm Subban for a No. 2-3 defenseman. The key for the Bruins is finding a defenseman that can play 20 minutes and ease the burden on Zdeno Chara.

Miller: Predators Paul Fenton on Center Ice Radio show on Pekka Rinne: “Fenton was asked about Pekka possibly coming down to Milwaukee on a conditioning assignment: We’ve done our homework on him. He’ll still be able to have a conditioning stint at some particular time. It could be split into a week at a time so that he could come down and maybe finish before the Olympic break and then just before the Olympic break is over, he could come down. We’ve looked into it, but again, we’re not getting ahead of ourselves here. Pekka is feeling really good. I watch him work out regularly in the gym, but not on the ice.

Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: There was talk that the Penguins may look to move Simon Despres, but it sounds like they still think he has the potential to be an impact player.
“Where he is right now, in terms of his career, he’s in a good spot,” Shero said. “In terms of the progression he’s made and his maturity, on and off the ice, I think that’s coming.
“Even though he’s not [in the NHL now], we still believe he’s a very good prospect for us and will be an NHL player, for sure.”
“In terms of our long-range plans, we’ve got some pretty good players here , and some good young players coming,” Shero said. “The good news is, he’s one of them.”

I know this will almost certainly be the eighth consecutive year since we made the playoffs. I hate that fact as much as anyone, but the reality is that this is only year four of the rebuild that started when we drafted Taylor Hall. The good news, if you can call it that, is that other teams that committed to fundamental rebuilds went through the same kind of droughts over the same kind of time frames, or longer. That doesn’t make it fun for anyone; it just means we have to stay the course.

Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Both Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau are close to signing contract extensions with the Sharks. Their deals will be close to their $7 million and $6.9 million deals. The Sharks could listen to offers for Dan Boyle, including the Rangers, but isn’t he’s not expected to be traded.

The Fourth Period: There are rumors that Ales Hemsky could land in Detroit. The Red Wings may only have around $500,000 in cap space, so any trade may have to be dollar-for-dollar. Panthers Brad Boyes and his shootout ability could help the Wings.

Aaron Portzline: Blue Jackets Marian Gaborik has missed a good portion of the season with a sprained knee and broken collar bone. Gaborik could return soon if doctors clear him. He’ll be a UFA at the end of the season and there have been no contract extension talks. There has been no indication that they are interested in re-signing him. It is possible that he could be dealt if he’s healthy.
“The situation is going to take care of itself one way or the other,” Gaborik said. “I like it here. I really like the guys and the city. But I’m just going day-to-day right now and focusing on getting healthy.”
